September 4, 2020 G Chat

I am sure you feel like I do, that fall has arrived much too quickly!  Where has the summer gone? I have heard that “time flies when you are having fun”… having fun yet?

Well, I am glad you asked!  Yes I am!  I pray that you also are finding moments and times of fun, of laughter, of delight and joy.

Are you wondering about my fun?  My fun is planning our fall!  September is always a productive month as we prepare for leadership for 2021, and as we reflect on our plans and look to the 2021 budget.  These are important parts of who we are and what we want to accomplish for the Lord in the next year.  If you are called to serve or assist in the ministry planning for the coming year, I pray you will hear the affirmations from us and God in our search of leadership, and say yes.

And there is more fun!  Brian and Jackson Smith are putting the finishing touches on our new Labyrinth, located to the left of the Worship Center.  Jackson’s vision for a prayer labyrinth is meeting us where we are in our spirits!  We need prayer in this time of unrest and pandemic life!

Both Kim and I are are working in concert to offer a full compliment of experiences on prayer for October.

Look for some special opportunities as we hold a Blessing and Dedication of the Labyrinth soon.  Kim is hard at work in creating some amazing fresh ideas for  Intergenerational/Youth ministry that work with the “sheltering-in” circumstances.  I will be hosting a number of Zoom class/experiences that launch you to take your own walk every week in October.  Finally, I hope to have a Special Worship Service to conclude the month of Prayer that makes space for us to name our losses and griefs, concluding with a walk to give each time to be silent and walk the Prayer Labyrinth.

This is the Good News!  Plan now to be part of this moving and dynamic time in which we are in touch with God in personal and life affirming ways. I call that fun!
Peace, Pastor Lisa

News on the Stotlers!

At the end of 2019 Elliott and Katherine Stotler announced that they were ending their time of service with TMS Global in South Africa.  Since then, they have been waiting for God to reveal to them their new opportunity to serve.
Just this month, Elliott has embarked on a new ministry role as Executive Director of Venezuela Now.  As of now, he will be based in Atlanta. When travel to Venezuela is opened up, there will probably be more direct involvement with the people and ministries there.
We will soon send out an update on the Stotlers’ story . . .

Sympathy to the Cunningham family, on the passing of Judy (Mike) Cunningham’s mother, Barbara Robertson. Judy said, “is in her eternal home now.  She is free from disease and is rejoicing in heaven with daddy and her loved ones!  We will miss her but know she is in a happy place!“. We give thanks for Barbara’s life and witness of the family in this time.

Prayers for our children and youth as they resume school, for teachers and parents who are guiding and supporting this new kind of learning.  Prayers for our Child Care staff and families for continued health, protection and assistance in their daily school process.  Continue to pray for one another and for our country for comfort, peace, freedom from anxiety, depression and fear. May God surround, protect and bring us assurance of God’s almighty hand with us during this difficult time.

Show our Shut-ins some Love!  A note from you would brighten their day and make a difference.  You don’t even have to “know” them, just sign the card, “your Coke’s Chapel Family”.

COMMITTEE ON FINANCE REPORT

Financial Snapshot for August:
Income needed for projected budget:  $20,400.00
Income collected after 4th Sunday:      $21,282.30

Finance wants to say thank you for being the most generous community a church could hope to have. Thank you for your commitment and your generous donations.  We could not have continued our ministry without your show of faith and gratefulness to God for His bountiful gifts.  Winston Churchill stated it like this, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Amen

Special Offering:  This Sunday, August 30, we will receive offerings to support Wesley Woods. Wesley Woods makes up a huge part of the North Georgia Annual Conference’s ministry for older adults.  Each year churches have made an offering on Mother’s Day for those who need financial assistance to reside in one of the ten Wesley communities.  Because of the pandemic, this year’s offering was delayed until August. Please plan to contribute to this outreach opportunity.  Most of those who reside in one of the Wesley Woods communities need some financial assistance annually.

Cokes Chapel will receive offerings this Sunday, August 30 to send to Wesley Woods.  You may give online by designating your offering by clicking on the button that reads “special offering”, as well as drop your gift in the Office door mail slot, or in the offering plate Sunday.  Caring for others is our privilege and joy through Wesley Woods ministry!

Important news:  Trustees and Finance are now preparing Cokes Chapel to renew our loan for the Child Care Center and Youth House.  The bank will review our financial picture and other aspects of the church.  At this time, particularly, it is important to reflect consistent, stable giving.

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL & YOUTH MINISTRY, August 26, 2020:

In Inter-generational Ministry, as we seek to open ourselves to God’s teaching through all the ages and stages of life, we will be offering a Fall focus on prayer.  Please look for more information to come in the weeks ahead!  This will be an opportunity for youth and adults to partner together to both learn about and practice prayer!

In this week’s Inter-generational Sunday School lesson, we will read about the prophet Deborah in Judges 4:1-16.  The lesson focuses on how we can learn from Deborah about how God uses leaders who display wisdom, fairness, humility and a cooperative spirit . If you would like to be included in the email list and receive this lesson, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com.  Each lesson includes commentary to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as an optional activity that can be done at home with children and/or youth.

Finally, in Youth Ministry, along with our coming focus on prayer, we are also developing plans to prepare youth for Peer Ministry Leadership.  Our hope is to equip young people with tools to be the loving presence of Christ in their relationships and within their spheres of connection.  Adult leadership training is currently underway.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!
With love,
Kim

G Chat August 20, 2020

Dear Church family,

This week, I received this letter about Cokes Chapel’s ministry at the Child Care Center.  I can think of no better way to say…. the church is alive, at work serving our community, meeting the needs of families!  Read this….

Good Morning,
I hope you are all doing fine in this unusual time but REAL time!  So many of us are getting tired for being inside and dealing with the abnormality of the situation.  I am being a bit stubborn about calling this the “new” normal.  I pray it is not a “new” normal.

I am writing this to tell you a praise story.  I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Childcare Center last Friday after I spoke with Keith about the Kick-Off of the Virtual Program they are offering to assist parents who MUST work.  Childcare offers parents a safe, loving environment for their children at $20 a day.  It is an amazing program offered to this community.  We, the church, are helping so many little people struggle through these times…picture a precious little girl named Emery, she is a first-grader.  She sits at her little cubby, that Childcare has created for each child, trying desperately to understand her schedule (with limited reading skills) this “new” way of learning. Her little tiny finger hits keys on her computer and listens with her headset to her teacher in a “meeting” where she sees other students in her class on her screen. Then her screen goes dark…nothing.  She raises her hand for help.  Someone comes to help, not her teacher, not her Mother, not an older sibling, basically, a stranger, for now, who is kind and trying to help her get back to her meeting with her teacher who has valuable information about her assignments. By the end of the day, Emery is in tears and wants her Mother.  I am telling you this story because you have not had the pleasure of seeing OUR childcare staff do what they do best…take care of God’s most precious gifts… OUR children.  How blessed Coke Chapel United Methodist Church is to have a ministry like this one.   Lol, Vivian Snyder

Say a prayer for all the teachers, children, our staff, and our fearless director Kristin McCoy, and her team including Amber, Mandy, and Ansley.

Worship continues at the pavilion Sundays, 9 am.**  Whether you worship on-line with us, or you choose to join us at the pavilion on Sunday’s, I pray you will know God’s presence in our worship.

In Christ,
Pastor Lisa

**in case of rain, or questions regarding if in-person outdoor worship will be held, refer to the cokeschapel.org website for announcements.  An email will be sent out through Church Wide Mail Chimp to announce rain or other changes.  Be sure you are signed up for our communications!

LIVING A TRIUMPHANT LIFE

Daily living with Jesus can provide us with what we need, all the time!  We are all looking for ways to be strong and faithful in these times of pandemic health challenges, broken race relations, and economic uncertainty.  God speaks through stories of Jesus, revealing love, compassion, giving us words to draw on for coping with our fears, giving new life to our faith and witness.

Jesus’ words and ways give us courage and hope in Christ.  Plan now to join us in August for some God-given strength, becoming the triumphant believers’ Christ intends us to be!

This is an excerpt from a blog by Thailand NOW (August 3, 2020)

Please read this and pray that Allie and David will be able to get their new visas without any more issues.

ALLIE & DAVID HOULE
Last month we asked you to pray for Thailand NOW missionaries David and Allie Houle, who serve as Field Directors for the Blessing Home Centers in Thailand.

Every missionary must have a long term visa so they can legally stay in the country, and David and Allie had employment visas through teaching part-time at a language school near Blessing Home in Pattaya.  But the language school went out of business in March, an economic victim of the COVID crisis.  And when the language school closed, their work permits and visas were canceled.  The Thai government gave all foreigners in Thailand amnesty until July 31 to either leave the country or obtain a new visa.  So Allie and David chose to start their own translation business, called Peachtree Translating (you can tell they are from Georgia), which would enable them to obtain a work permit and visas to be able to stay in the country.

They hired a prominent law firm in Pattaya that specializes in this kind of situation, and they began the process.  But because of COVID, everything slowed down and the process has taken longer than expected.  And then just two weeks ago, they found out that the lawyer they hired gave wrong advice and they would need to resubmit new documents and start over again.  They would not have enough time to meet the deadline.  If they could not meet the deadline, they would need to leave the country and would not be able to get back until the COVID crisis is over in the States.

So we ended up praying that the amnesty would be extended by the Thai government.  For many days Thai government officials were saying that the amnesty would not be extended.  This made us pray more fervently.  Then last week the Thai government announced that they would extend the amnesty through September 26.  We give praise to the Lord that David and Allie have more time for this process.  Please continue to pray for them.

Important news:  Trustees and Finance are now preparing Cokes Chapel to renew our loan for the Child Care Center and Youth House.  The bank will review our financial picture and other aspects of the church.  At this time, particularly, it is important to reflect consistent, stable giving.

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL & YOUTH MINISTRY, August 19, 2020:

In Youth and Children’s Ministry, as our young people began the 2020-2021 School Year, we sought to support and encourage them, especially since they are facing many continuing challenges through virtual learning and limited or altered engagement with friends and teachers.  As a way of blessing our young people and letting them know that their church family is lifting them in prayer, we surprised them with “Blessing Signs” in their front yards.

As a congregation, we ask that you please remember in prayer our youth and children, as well as their teachers, school administrators, and parents.  We ask for God’s guidance, strength, wisdom, and love, as everyone seeks to live into the days ahead.

In this week’s Inter-generational Sunday School lesson, we will read about the call of the prophet Samuel as it is found in 1 Samuel 3:1-21.  The lesson focuses on how we, like Samuel, must learn how to recognize and follow God’s voice. If you would like to be included in the email list and receive this lesson, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com.  Each lesson includes commentary to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as an optional activity that can be done at home with children and/or youth.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!
With love,
Kim

G Chat August 13, 2020

Dear Church family,

Worship is changing, evolving, and more of a practice than ever before.  We have found ourselves in a new place, a zone we did not construct or choose.  Yet, the Holy Spirit continues to move us to seek God.  God is with us, beside us, revealing all-new understandings about our faith and relationship – we know that!  And yet….

If we say God is in all things, then can we say we come seeking in this new worship circumstance, looking towards a revelation from God? The good thing about being out of our comfort zone is that we can become more aware of nuances, we are set to see and hear from a new vantage point. God is in a sense “freed up” from our expectations and desires, providing new sacred ground for God to plow in our spirit.

Worship is a practice.  We go at it with all our hearts, learning and leaning on Jesus to make it an offering pleasing to God.  Whether you worship on-line with us, or you choose to join us at the pavilion on Sunday’s, I pray you will know God’s presence in our worship.  God will bring good out of this time if we will be open and allow the Spirit to encourage, teach, and inspire us to the Kingdom work that is waiting for each of us.

In Christ,
Pastor Lisa

Jesus’ words and ways give us courage and hope in Christ.  Plan now to join us in August for some God-given strength, becoming the triumphant believers’ Christ intends us to be!

Cokes Chapel is a mission-minded church, and this time of limited physical serving has been hard.  Many members have asked what they can do – without coming into contact with others.  Here are a few ideas:

–   Backpack Buddies continues to help feed community children. You can find a list of needed   foods on their website, or you can make a monetary donation on that site.

–   Back to School Supplies are Needed at One Roof – If you’d like to donate, feel free to drop any supplies off at their location at 255 Temple Avenue, Newnan, GA 30263, from 10 AM to 4 PM Monday – Saturday.

–   Meals on Wheels of Coweta has been delivering meals two days a week all summer.  These deliveries include enough food for the week. Our Cokes Chapel team will resume our volunteering with this group when safely possible. Monetary donations are appreciated.

–   We continue regular support of our three missionary families, the Houles, the Hadden’s, and Caleb Earle. Please include them in your daily prayers.

– If you have any questions or ideas, please contact Betsy and Earl Bagley. ebbagley@gmaill.com

UMW called a meeting on Friday, August 7, 2020.  Nine ladies were present and Wanda Moore showed up but did not come in, so we all went out to see her.  It was wonderful to see her and hear about Mick. We caught up on what we have been doing, discussed that the treasury is a little low at $538.94 but we have continued to give, and we decided to begin meeting at our regular time (Sept 17 at 9:30 AM).  Come meet with us if you want to be blessed by warm fellowship and lots of laughter!!!

COMMITTEE ON FINANCE REPORT

A WORD ABOUT OUR FINANCES from your Pastor
Dear family,
We wait with bated breath to hear what new thing the Virus has re-shaped – school, eating out, shopping… you name it, and Corona has touched it. Your Church is not immune either.  When we had to cease worshipping In-person together, it impacted us on every level.  You know what I am talking about – don’t you!  We miss our gatherings, hugs, our Mission Silent Auction, and meal… the list is long.

You are missed.  No doubt about it!  I miss your smiles, hugs, conversations, and on!  I miss and have concern for each of you who must be quarantined from the community, knowing how debilitating it can be emotionally and spiritually.  Your Church misses the regular giving that keeps us functioning even while we wait for “normal” to return.  We may not be “in” the building, but ministry is continuing at a fast and demanding pace in spite of COVID.  Cokes Chapel ministry to one another and to our community is desperately needed during this time of unsettled life.

Thank you for loving Cokes Chapel, loving the Lord, and giving to keep our ministry moving forward for God’s Glory.  If you think it doesn’t matter if you give because the routine of the church has changed, I can assure you, your giving does matter.  You may trust that new routines are in place and working to increase our reach for God every day.  Your giving, prayers, witness, presence (online or in-person), and service still remain our standard.  We are the church, you are the Church, we are the Church together!  Help us to be the Church God desires us to be by supporting all the parts of ministry that present the high standard of God first in our lives.

In Christ, Pastor Lisa

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL & YOUTH MINISTRY, August 12, 2020:

In Youth Ministry, we held our first in-person gathering on Saturday, August 8th.   In keeping with our church safety guidelines, we gathered on the lawn outside the Youth House for a socially distanced time of fellowship, games, devotion, and prayer.  It was great to see so many of our youth in-person as we had fun and shared our joys and concerns during these difficult times.  Before we ended the gathering, each youth was invited to stand in the middle of our large outdoor circle as we outstretched our hands in their direction and offered a blessing over each youth individually for God’s guidance, strength, wisdom, and love throughout this new school year.

In this week’s Inter-generational Sunday School lesson, we will read about Moses’ call from God to lead the Israelites out of slavery as it is found in Exodus 3:1–4:17.  The lesson focuses on how Moses argues against this call and how God reassures him. If you would like to be included in the email list and receive this lesson, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com.  Each lesson includes commentary to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as an optional activity that can be done at home with children and/or youth.

With love,
Kim

At a recent meeting of the UMW we realized there are missing tables in the Fellowship Hall.  We are asking that they be returned right away!  Please always let the church office know if you borrow one!
