resumes this week:          Sunday, October 11 at             NEW TIME: 10:00 am

Look for the special notice coming your way titled “Returning to Inside Worship” from Pastor Lisa for further details.

“Finding Our Way”. Join us in this sermon series throughout October for a month-long focus on prayer.  Jesus’ taught on prayer throughout his ministry.  Prayer is the lifeblood of our faith. Prayer is a sacred time when we open to the Holy Spirit to reveal, teach, comfort, and heal.  Take advantage of these short term Weekly Prayer Labyrinth Groups, and Prayer Partners.  Haven’t signed up for either of these groups? Contact Lisa at ldempsey@cokeschapel.org or call/text 770-598-5066

October can provide a fresh focus for our prayer life through scripture, teaching, and practice.  Let’s saturate our hearts and lives with prayer for the benefit of our soul and to the glory of God.  May this season be full of the presence of God as we pray, grow, witness, and serve one another and the world!

Thanksgiving Baskets
We will again be helping people in our community to have a special Thanksgiving dinner.  Due to the corona virus and our desire to keep everyone safe, we are going to provide gift cards to families.  They will use the grocery cards to buy their own food, and it will not be necessary for our folks to spend so much time in stores.
HOW to participate: To donate money to purchase gift cards for food, please give funds to Caroline Huckaby or Betsy Bagley.  If you prefer to write a check to the church, be sure to designate “Thanksgiving Food” on the “for” line on your check.

Growing Your Faith Through GENEROSITY

2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

October is stewardship month for 2020.  What is stewardship?  Christian stewardship is the free choice and joyful activity as a believer (read the Apostle’s Creed) and member of this community/church, Cokes Chapel UMC, in the management of ALL of LIFE AND LIFE’S RESOURCES FOR GOD’S PURPOSE to build the KINGDOM here on earth.

We are responsible for all things freely given to us.  We make choices every day regarding how we will proceed in life.  It is a God given personal choice.  But, do we always make those choices as disciples of Jesus Christ.  That is our dilemma! For the next few weeks in GChat we will focus on the following scenario:

A wealthy man was preparing to leave on a trip when he learned of a family that had suffered a great loss and was nearly destitute. He had compassion on them but was pressed to depart so he called for his son and gave him a check, saying: “I am leaving on a trip and I have compassion for the family who has suffered such a loss. Please take this check, keep what you need for your own expenses and give the remainder to this family as a gift from me. If you are still in need, tell me. Remember, I love you and will always take care of you.”

After the father departed, the son cashed the check, then he took the funds and…  How will this story end?  Follow us on a weekly journey of a generosity parable.

Take a few minutes and consider: How would you finish this story?

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL & YOUTH MINISTRY, October 7, 2020:

In Inter-generational Ministry, the month of October kicks off our Prayer Partnerships!  This week, participants, made up of both youth and adults, will receive Prayer Packets with Scripture references on prayer, inspirational quotes about prayer, information about praying for others, and information about their prayer partner.   Also, once a month with our first meeting being this Sunday, October 11th, participants will gather via Zoom to learn more about a specific prayer focus, as well as have an opportunity to meet and share with their partner in a “breakout room.”  Partners are asked to pray for each other on a daily basis throughout the months of October through December.

In this week’s Inter-generational Sunday School lesson, we will read about faith, salvation, and righteousness as found in Romans 10:5-13.  The lesson focuses on how our Christian confession that “Jesus is Lord” is our claim to righteousness, and hence relationship with God. If you would like to be included in the email list and receive this lesson, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com.  Each lesson includes Bible facts to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as opportunity for spiritual practice.

In Youth Ministry, several of our youth will be participating in Prayer Partnerships which begin this week.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our young people to grow in faith through a focus on prayer which involves both praying for others and experiencing the power of being prayed for.  In the coming weeks, our youth will be engaged in times of fellowship (in-person gathering on Oct. 18) and service (“Praise Pop-Ins” on Oct. 25).  More information and updates on these ministry gatherings will unfold in the coming weeks.

Finally, in Children’s Ministry, given current restrictions both within the Cokes Chapel Childcare Center (CCCC) and the church due to COVID-19, the annual Trunk-or-Treat children’s event will not take place this year.  In lieu of the event, the CCCC will host several fall activities within their individual classrooms.  As a Cokes Chapel family, we still have the opportunity to support the work of our CCCC through the donations of candy and prizes/trinkets.  During the month of October, please bring any donations with you to worship on Sunday mornings or drop them off in the plastic bin outside the church office.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!
With love,
Kim

I would like to request prayers for the safety of Surigao del Norte in the Philippines from the Covid-19 virus.  The country has now become the new epicenter of Southeast Asia, but here in Surigao it hasn’t really touched us much.  It’s a very poor region here with a lot of struggling farmers. I don’t think this area can handle an outbreak. Thanks for including us in your prayers to God. I appreciate it.

A grand invitation to “Finding Our Way” in prayer

Join us in October for a month-long focus on prayer.  Through Jesus’ teaching, we know how important prayer is to our faith life.  Prayer is a sacred time when we open our spirit to the Holy Spirit to reveal, teach, comfort, and heal, meeting us where we are in our needs.  There will be opportunities for community prayer, individual prayer, walking prayer (the Labyrinth).  There will be opportunities to pray for each other and share prayers with others even as we social distance.

Weekly Prayer Labyrinth Groups – Our weekly discussion and reflection groups will meet on Zoom*, utilizing a finger labyrinth, which is yet another way to participate in prayer any where, any time by using a print out of a labyrinth.  Then, all participants will have a week to walk the outdoor labyrinth at their convenience with a particular focus, or intention.

October sermons will offer times of reflection on the ways God makes way for our best life to come into our spirits.

Yet another opportunity, as Kim is working to form Prayer Partners through out the church. All ages are encouraged to join in this short term commitment! Other fun and engaging events are listed in her information below.

This season in our lives is proving to be challenging on so many levels.  These offerings are given with the prayer that through multiple opportunities, we can saturate our hearts and lives with prayer for the benefit of our soul and to the glory of God.  May October be full of the presence of God as we pray, grow, witness and serve one another and the world!

Peace, Pastor Lisa

Schedule for weekly Prayer Labyrinth Zoom* gatherings:

Evening – Mondays, October 5, 12, 19 and 26     6:30-8:00 p.m.
Daytime – Tuesdays, October 6, 13, 20 and 27  10:00 – 11:30 a.m
V.I.P. – Register Now to take part In the prayer labyrinth groups by contacting the church office, or emailing ldempsey@cokeschapel.org. Prayer Labyrinth group will receive a packet by Sunday, Oct. 3. Deadline to register is Wednesday, Sept. 30.

* Zoom – what is it and why should I learn to use it???  Learning to adapt and be the church is taking new forms: I, and others, are learning how great it is to see one another through on-line Zoom gatherings!  Surprisingly, Zoom brings a great experience of fellowship and seeing one another that  we have been missing during our sheltering in time.  I encourage you to make the effort to learn how to use Zoom on your computer so you can get the benefit of our weekly meetings. We will send a separate notice with instructions and have a practice session for those interested.

YOU are invited to be a PRAYER PARTNER!

This Fall, we would like to invite YOU, the Cokes Chapel family, to partner with one another in prayer!  Participants will simply be paired with someone within the congregation (youth, child, or adult) and each of you will pray for one another from October through December. It’s that simple!  This is a great opportunity for all ages of our church family to care for one another through the loving act of prayer!

TO REGISTER:  Please email Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com by September 27th!

Prayer Partners will be asked to:

  • communicate once a week via phone, text or email (TBD by each pair) to communicate prayer celebrations and needs
  • pray for each other daily—at a particular time or whenever the person comes to mind
  • participate in a once a month Zoom Gathering on prayer (you may connect via phone call, computer, or smart phone/tablet) which will include a monthly prayer focus, as well as time for a breakout session to see and/or talk with your Prayer Partner (Please DO NOT let this be a deterrent to participating!  It can be as easy as making a phone call.)
  • send a periodic (perhaps once a month) card or package to your Prayer Partner as a form of encouragement

Special recognition for our Tuesday Bible study group.  I congratulate this group who completed the reading and study of the Gospel of Mark.  We began the end of May, 2019 and finished September 15.  We practiced reading, discernment, discussion with the purpose of gaining confidence in our abilities to read and understand before relying on commentaries and other helps.  Well done – it was a great time of learning and growing in the Word!

For many years our Jubilee Singers have been visiting the residents at Newnan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center every week.  We sing, visit, share an inspirational or funny story, pray, and often give little gifts.
Due to the virus, we have not been able to go to the Center since the middle of March.  We want our friends to know how much we miss them.  If you would like to help, please write an encouraging  card/note to a resident.  Leave it unsealed, and bring it to church any Sunday, to UMW Sept. 17th, or to the church office mail slot. You can sign your name if you’d like, but also please include that you are from Cokes Chapel.  Please give your cards to Betsy Bagley or Brenda Hanes. Thank you for helping bring some joy to these sweet people.

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL & YOUTH MINISTRY, September 16, 2020:

In Inter-generational Ministry, as we seek to open ourselves to God’s teaching through all the ages and stages of life, we will be offering a Fall focus on prayer.  This month we are inviting ALL ages within the Cokes Chapel Family to sign-up to be a Prayer Partner this fall!  (Please See Sign-Up Information in this G-Chat!)  All participants will be partnered with someone and you will be invited to pray for one another in the months of October-December.  Participants will receive a Prayer Packet with information and suggestions for prayer, as well as a once a month time of instruction and an opportunity to share with their partner.  Also this month, Pastor Lisa and I have been working on the design of our upcoming Labyrinth class which will be coming in October.  It is our hope that everyone will engage in these offerings as we seek to grow in faith and community through the practice of prayer.

In this week’s Inter-generational Sunday School lesson, we will read about the conversion of Paul as it is found in Acts 9:1-20.  The lesson focuses on how forgiveness and grace were instrumental in Paul’s conversion . If you would like to be included in the email list and receive this lesson, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com.  Each lesson includes Bible facts to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as opportunity for spiritual practice.

Finally, in Youth Ministry, we will be gathering in person this Sunday for a day of fun and fellowship.  We will meet outdoors at Line Creek for a picnic and a time of hiking and catching up.  Our youth will also be informed about all of our fall plans that will allow for service, growth in faith, and times to build relationship together.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!
With love,
Kim

SYMPATHY

Our sympathy to Brenda Hagen in the loss of her brother, Ray Massengill.

Prayers for the coast line of Florida. Alabama and Louisiana hit by the Hurricane Sally, and the surrounding areas dealing with flooding.  For the west coast fires, those serving and fighting these dangerous circumstances. For those feeling unrest and fear over social injustice, that peace would reign and violence would stop. Prayers our children and youth as they resume school, for teachers and parents.  Prayers for our Child Care staff and families for continued health, protection and assistance in their daily school process.  Continue to pray for one another and for our country for comfort, peace, freedom from anxiety, depression and fear. May God surround, protect and bring us assurance of God’s almighty hand with us during this difficult time.

Show our Shut-ins some Love!  A note from you would brighten their day and make a difference.  You don’t even have to “know” them, just sign the card, “your Coke’s Chapel Family”.

Consider sending one card each week to rotate through the list, and let the Cokes Chapel love shine out!

Something to Look Forward To!

This tops any breaking news of the day, is richer than the best Ice Cream flavor of the month, and better for the soul than we can imagine!

What could that be?  Well, it is a combination of things:  First is the joy of seeing a project move from construction to completion.  Mix in the awareness that the Holy Spirit was in the midst of our Visioning in January and February of 2019 to bring about the idea of Cokes having a Prayer Labyrinth surfaced March of 2019.  A treat for the soul as the Holy Spirit revealed used our Youth, Jackson Smith, and his Eagle Scout project and interest in labyrinth’s to build one for Cokes and community use.

Better for the soul than we can imagine – each of the sightings of God in this journey, and now the potential that this labyrinth has for the soul life it can foster.  By taking a walk, listening, reflecting, and praying, God comes near in profound ways.

Anticipation is one of the best spirit builders I know.  Anticipate with me, our October offerings of Zoom Labyrinth “gatherings” that prepare you for a personal labyrinth walk each week of October, beginning the week of Oct. 5.  There will be DAY and EVENING zoom gatherings that complement your individual weekly walk.  Sign-ups for zoom gatherings begin next week, Sept. 17.

The Holy Spirit is hovering, touching, and directing us forward.  Let us continue in faithful prayer and practice, remaining in step with the unfolding Kingdom of God with us.  While this is a hard time, it is also a time when the purpose and love of God are being revealed.  Just look.  See.  Embrace.  Souls in harmony with God are such a beautiful outworking of God’s presence!

Like I ended last week – This is the Good News!  Plan now to be part of this moving and dynamic time in which we are in touch with God in personal and life-affirming ways. I call that fun!
Peace, Pastor Lisa
