Lent series:  Lent: No Question About It!

Growing in faith is our lifetime task.  We face uncertainty every day, whether in our personal life, in our relationships with others, with decisions and circumstances that require our best, faithful responses.  Who do you turn to?  How can we do our level best to respond in ways that will please God and honor Jesus Christ?
Let’s look to the Word these next forty days of Lent, where we can find direction, comfort, and spiritual teaching that will provide focus, clarity, and joy in knowing we are walking in His will.  No Question about it – there are answers in God’s Word!

“Forgiveness: A Lenten Study”

This is a church-wide study! EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

Sunday Mornings

9:30-10:30 AM

via ZOOM

Begins Feb. 21st-March 28th

Forgiving others and humbly asking for forgiveness are central disciplines for all Christian believers. Lent, a time to reflect on our Christian journey, is an appropriate time to deepen our understanding and practice of forgiveness. In six brief chapters, we will address such questions as the following:

  • Is forgiveness a Christian duty under all circumstances? Or are there situations when Christians do not need to forgive?
  • Is forgiveness a matter between individuals, or is it meaningful only in the context of communities?
  • Is forgiving the best route to healing for the injured?
  • How do we get past emotional barriers to real forgiveness?

With clarity, insight, and sensitivity, this book is the perfect resource for examining both our ability to forgive and our own need for forgiveness.

Prayers needed for our Missionaries, the Houles in Thailand
Here is an update from Allie and David about their quest to adopt a child.

We have met with our local orphanage about adopting a very special girl who has special needs (slow development and possibly deaf). Because our area is in lockdown, due to Covid, no one is allowed to visit the orphanage so we have not met her yet. Despite only talking to her social worker and seeing 1 picture of her from when she was 6 months old, we have taken ourselves off the waiting list and started the paperwork for adopting her.  We are praying that the lockdown will be over soon. Once lockdown is over we can visit and see her. The orphanage is only 10 minutes away from our house and we are so eager to meet her.

We have a very long and complicated process of adoption paperwork to do. We need lots of prayers that this process can move quickly and easily so that we can bring her home!
Being foreigners who are doing a local adoption is extremely rare. Because our case is different from most, it can make things difficult and confusing.

We need lots of prayers because there is nothing we can do to help move the process along, we have to wait. We started the process of adoption 2 years ago so we have been waiting for a long time.

Thank you for your prayers that things can move forward quickly and easily!

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL & YOUTH MINISTRY, January 27, 2021:

In Inter-generational Ministry, the Inter-generational Sunday School class is currently meeting via Zoom on Sunday mornings from 9:30-10:30 am.  This winter’s focus is “Hope.”  Our current unit for study explores Scripture passages related to the theme “God with Us.”  This coming Sunday we will study John 1:10-18 and contemplate what it means to be part of God’s family.  If you are interested in participating in this Zoom Sunday School gathering please contact Kim at kim.reindl@gmail.com or simply join us on Sunday morning. The recurring Zoom link is
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84276399302?pwd=M3Vsb1RHL2lmYlptTi94RGF3QkZTUT09.
No prior participation, nor preparation, is required.

Also, in Inter-generational ministry, we will begin a new study for the season of Lent that focuses on “Forgiveness.”  This Lenten study will begin on Sunday, February 21st and run for six weeks, through Sunday March 28th.  Look for more information in this issue of the G-Chat!

In Youth Ministry, we are continuing with “Cocoa and Conversation.”  This has been a time for me to talk with our youth individually via FaceTime, Zoom or phone.  The purpose of these conversations has been checking-in with our young people to listen about how things are going with them, taking time to pray with them, as well as gathering feedback and suggestions about where and how they would like to engage within the Youth Group in the weeks ahead as we seek to grow as followers of Christ.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!

With love,
Kim

SYMPATHY
Paul Snyder’s nephew, Gregory Alan Snyder, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 22nd.  Please keep the Snyder family in your prayers.

Our deepest sympathy to Hugh & Jeanine Giles and their family on the loss of their son, Ryan Giles, in a car accident last week.  Please remember the family in your prayers.

Let us join in prayer together:  Lord, we continue to pray for one another and for our country.  We lift up the leaders of our nation to God, asking for divine guidance, wisdom, and a deep desire for peace. Be with the people of this nation who are looking to our leaders to provide for their needs, and may they be met with compassion and generosity.
May our change in leadership look to You for guidance and wisdom, listening and acting as You would have us to do.
Lord, while there are leaders and decision-makers of our nation we look to, may we always look to You as the ultimate one that we depend on and take our lead from.  Help us to seat our faith, hope, and trust in You.  All else is but a passing moment, like chaff that is cleared from the grain, so that You will be known. Only You have the power through willing hearts to bring hope and peace.  May God surround, protect and reveal Your healing presence to us, our leadership, and our nation.  Amen

Happy New Year!!

2020 was quite the year and I’m sure we are all hoping that this new year does truly bring a new beginning. For us, we are definitely moving forward into a new beginning. Last week, on January 3rd, Eva and I got married in Georgetown, Tennessee! We had a wonderful and restful honeymoon in Asheville, North Carolina, and are now living in Ooltewah, Tennessee, until we are able to get back to Italy. Now that Eva has finished college and the wedding is finished, we can finally pick things back up with the visa process, which we are hoping to have completed by April. With the craziness of the last 4 months, I haven’t sent out an update in a while. So here are a few things that have happened:

OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2020

At the beginning of October, I left for Forest City, North Carolina, to lead a month and a half long training time with a group of students who would spend the next 8 months in Guatemala. This was very exciting for our Global Year Team, not only because it is the first group we have sent there, but also because we were able to send students abroad despite the travel restrictions stunting global missions around the world. This time with the students was truly so impactful for them. We really feel like they were better prepared spiritually for their time overseas. Please be in prayer with us as they continue to serve in Guatemala.

DECEMBER 2020

During December, Eva was finishing up her undergraduate education at Dalton State College. She graduated with a Bachelor’s in English and a 4.0! It was so fun to celebrate her hard work even through a virtual ceremony at home. We spent the rest of the month preparing for the wedding and enjoying the holidays with our family.

JANUARY 2021

Our wedding was such an incredible day and we were so pleased with how it all turned out. We had so much help throughout the weekend and were really able to enjoy the day without any worries.

Now, that we are married, we feel like we can finally begin moving forward with the visa process again. We are working on gathering several documents which we will need in order to apply for the visa in Miami. Please be in prayer with us as we work on this in the next few months. We will also be trying to gather the last bit of our monthly support.

Thank you so much for your continued support through prayer and finances. We are so thankful for each of you and wish you all a happy fresh start to this new year!

If you feel led to give a one-time donation or join our monthly support team, you can do so by clicking here.

We often hear the words “Hindsight is 20/20,” but I want to share these words with you today; “2020 is Hindsight”. The year 2020 held challenges we have never seen before. Individuals, families, churches, businesses, and governments worldwide have been impacted due to the Global Pandemic.

As you can see from the 2020 annual recap, we have been blessed with faithful givers.  We have continued to support our three missionaires, Luthersville, One Roof, The Needy Family fund and have paid our bills. You have made a big difference in the work our church is doing.

Thank you for supporting Cokes Chapel!  We are honored you would bless us with your generosity!

Nancy Vermilyea, Finance Chair

2 Corinthians 9:7-8 “Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work.”

Also, in Inter-generational ministry, we will begin a new study for the season of Lent starting on Sunday, February 21.  Look for more information to come!

In Youth Ministry, we are beginning the new year with “Cocoa and Conversation.”  I will be talking with our youth individually over the next couple of weeks via Zoom or phone.  This will be a time of checking-in with our young people to listen about how things are going with them, as well as a time to gather feedback and suggestions about where and how they would like to engage within the church and with others in the coming year as we seek to grow as followers of Christ.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!

With love,

Let us join in prayer together:  Lord, we continue to pray for one another and for our country.  We lift up the leaders of our nation to God, asking for divine guidance, wisdom and a deep desire for peace. Be with the people of this nation who are looking to our leaders to provide for needs, and may they be met with compassion and generosity.  In this season of transition for out country, may we be the guide and example of a country that honors democracy and strives for peace.
Lord, while there are leaders and decision makers of our nation, help us to seat our faith, hope and trust in You.  All else is but a passing moment, like chaff that is cleared from the grain, so that You will be known. Only You are have the power through willing hearts to bring hope and peace.  May God surround, protect and reveal Your healing presence in these times.  Amen

We have a unique opportunity to start our new year out with this invitation. I have always found the Wesley Covenant Prayer meaningful and inspiring.  This weeks’ conversation partners are Rev. We continue to support our three missionary families:   Allie and David Houle;  Amanda and Matt Hadden; and Caleb Earle.  We were not able to have our Dinner/Silent Auction in August because of covid limitations.

Please consider donating to our missionary fund to help meet our pledges to these three families until we are able to have some fundraisers.  A one-time donation or once-a-month gifts would be appreciated.  Designate donation for “Missionaries” when you give.

Have a wonderful 2021 and help our missionaries as they serve!

Again, thank you for supporting the 20 gifts for children and additional gifts for eleven children in our community.  Thank you to everyone who has helped make Christmas even more special for these children.

Cokes Chapel UMC Finance Committee would like to thank the congregation for their faithful reoccurring contributions during this unusual year that we shall remember as the year of the great Covid pandemic when we had to close the doors of our beautiful little church.  Many of us have struggle to make sense of all the different rules and regulations this event has created for us personally and collectively.  We have struggled as our close community of believers have succumbed to worship on-line, perhaps attend another church, or unfortunately not worship at all.  The Bibles tells us God is good even in the bad times…trust Him.  We have heard it many times, that God has always taken care of us and, in my experience, He has!

As new leadership takes over this committee, we should continue to trust God with His infinite wisdom and goodness to take care of His church even in the bad times.  We hope that this new year will bring us hope in the future, peace in our hearts, joy of Jesus Christ on our faces  and, the greatest of these, love within our hearts. Immanuel!   Amen
Vivian Snyder, outgoing Finance Chairperson

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL & YOUTH MINISTRY, January 6, 2021:

In Youth Ministry, our annual Youth Christmas Party was held outdoors at the Youth House on Sunday, December 20th.  We gathered around the campfire and enjoyed a fabulous meal (thanks to Jackie Simpson, Arianna Smith, and Carma McCallie), while playing games like detecting Christmas carol and movie names through emojis, peppermint stack contests (family table groups competing against each other), Christmas trivia, and a luminary treasure hunt!   We were grateful to be able to adapt our annual gathering in such a way as to honor the need for safe practices while still allowing us to celebrate the joy of the season together!
