Thanksgiving Baskets
We will again be helping people in our community to have a special Thanksgiving dinner. Due to the corona virus and our desire to keep everyone safe, we are going to provide gift cards to families. They will use the grocery cards to buy their own food, and it will not be necessary for our folks to spend so much time in stores.
HOW to participate: To donate money to purchase gift cards for food, please give funds to Caroline Huckaby or Betsy Bagley. If you prefer to write a check to the church, be sure to designate “Thanksgiving Food” on the “for” line on your check.

Growing Your Faith Through GENEROSITY
Scripture says, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also
reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
In the last several weeks we have focused on the parable below:
A wealthy man was preparing to leave on a trip when he learned of a family that had suffered a great loss and was nearly destitute. He had compassion on them but was pressed to depart so he called for his son and gave him a check, saying: “I am leaving on a trip and I have compassion for the family who has suffered such a loss. Please take this check, keep what you need for your own expenses and give the remainder to this family as a gift from me. If you are still in need, tell me. Remember, I love you and will always take care of you.” After the father departed, the son cashed the check, then he took the funds and…How will the parable end?
In week 1 the son considered the things he didn’t have but wanted. He bought what he wanted then he pridefully gave what was left to the family. His father, upon his return, was disappointed that his son didn’t trust him. The moral with this ending is we are never more like God than when we give. Seek and understand the character of God.
In week 2 the son grew frustrated by his father’s request. He would be obedient, but not joyful. He took his portion and delivered the remainder to the family in need. Seeing how appreciative the family was for the generous gift, the son accepted the praise and honor for his gift…he never told them the gift was from his father. When the father returned and learned of his son’s actions, he was sad. “While you gave a good amount, your heart was not right. Why, when I gave to you so selflessly, did you keep the glory for the gift for yourself?” The moral with this ending is we glorify God when we give in his name. Seek and understand the character of God.
In week 3 the son did as his father asked. He took just just what he needed, then took even some of that and added it to the amount to be given to the family. Then joyfully, he gave the amount to the family in need. The family rejoiced and wanted to tell everyone of his generous gift. He told them the gift was from his father who was compassionate and kind. It was his father’s generosity they should praise, and not himself, for he was only being an obedient son. When the father returned and learned of his son’s actions, he was pleased. “Well done, son. Because you have been faithful with what I provided, I will entrust you with much more so that the world may experience my generosity through you.”
The Scripture teaches us giving in God’s name blesses both the giver and receiver: “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35)
And, giving rewards us with God’s continued provision for us to steward. In Luke 6:38 it is written “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Giving allows us to experience the fullness of the life God created us to live. “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” (1 Tim. 6:17-19) The moral with this ending is we experience the life that is truly life as we give selflessly, joyfully, freely and with a heart to glorify God.

MINISTRY MESSAGE: INTER-GENERATIONAL, YOUTH & CHILDREN’S MINISTRY, October 28, 2020:
In Youth Ministry, last Sunday we began our “Praise Pop-Ins” (i.e., “We praise God for you!;” 1 Corinthians 1:4-9), as a way of offering love and encouragement to members of the Cokes Chapel family who may be experiencing difficult or challenging times. This is an opportunity for small groups of youth (2-4 youth) and accompanying adults (2-3 adults) to serve by using their gifts and talents in loving outreach to others in community. For our October “Pop-Ins” we visited two houses. The Pop-In Team remained outside at a safe distance while offering conversation, Scripture reading, music, prayer, and a blessing. Recipients were also gifted with care packages that included baked goods and artwork from the youth. Additional “Praise Pop-In” Teams will be making visits in November and December.
In Inter-generational Ministry, Prayer Partnerships are continuing as youth and college age young adults have been partnered with adults in our congregation, praying for each other daily while communicating prayer needs and celebrations on a weekly basis. Inter-generational Sunday School is continuing with “at home” lessons until the beginning of Advent on November 29th, when we will begin gathering again in-person with the start of an Advent Study. This week’s at home Sunday School lesson continues our focus on covenant with the story of Ezra reading the Instruction Scroll to the people as found in Nehemiah 8:1-12. If you would like to be included in the email list and receive this “at home” lesson, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com. Each lesson includes Bible facts to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as opportunity for spiritual practice.
God is at work all around us! May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!
With love,
Kim
