Church Council Supports Guidelines for Safe Gatherings
On June 24, Cokes Chapel Church Council voted to implement the guidelines presented by the Health and Welfare team in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Your team, representing a broad spectrum of members from each working committee, did an excellent job of addressing current plans and guidelines.  Please read through the two attachments that address “Worship Guidelines” and “Guidelines for In-Person Gatherings”.

Your careful review of these documents below is important as we begin to hold in-person worship this Sunday, July 12 at 9:00 in our parking lot

Thank you for helping us show hospitality, concern for one another by adhering to our guidelines of social distancing, wearing masks until seated in your chair, as well as other items you will read about below.
In Christ,

We have been opening our church food pantry on Monday mornings for people in our community who are in need of help.  Since we have not had any response, we will no longer be opening on Mondays.  However, if anyone knows someone who would like to receive food from our pantry, please have them contact Sherba Peek (404-395-3729) or Betsy Bagley (770-301-2577). We will be happy to meet them and help provide food for them.

COMMITTEE ON FINANCE REPORT

The Finance Committee met on June 18.  All members agreed to the following recommendations:

1.  Cokes Chapel UMC Trustees will begin the process to refinance the loan on the Childcare and Youth House very soon if not before (2021).  It will be extremely important that our books show as much net income as possible and still keep the lights on and the staff paid.
In preparation for loan renewal, Finance has determined that our goal is to have reserve funds that reflect a month of average expenses of about 30,000, at the close of December 2020.   In order to accomplish this reserve, Finance is asking ALL program chairs to spend only those funds that are absolutely necessary.
2. We will operate on a month by month schedule until things stabilize economically and socially.
3. Finance Chair will be more visible in the day-to-day operations of the ministry i.e. checking vouchers; monitoring deposits weekly (Brenda will continue to make deposits on Wednesday during the month of July); closely analyzing credit card charges.  Our next meeting will be July 16 in the Fellowship Hall at 6:30 PM.

July 1 we will return to our original budget numbers of $ 22,400.oo a month.  Our recent needs were lowered by a bank deferral of the CCC and Youth House mortgage.   Also, the UMC North Georgia Conference paid for Pastor Lisa’s Healthflex insurance in April, May and June.

Current Budget Funds needed monthly= $22,400.00

Budget Funds collected  as of July 8, 2020= $7,750.00

Thank you for your generosity and faithfulness in this most unusual time.  We have been blessed with so many of you who understand how your heart determines your treasurers.  We know for a fact that God is GOOD all the time!!  Amen

UMW opened the pantry during June from 9AM-11AM on Mondays.  We assisted two families.  Both of these families have contact through Betsy and receive food through her.  Due to lack of activity, we have discontinued open pantry hours.
We are still receiving donations to the pantry. You may leave donations In the tub under the pavilion next to the Fellowship Hall.  Thank you for your support!!

JUNIOR MISSION CAMP:

PLEASE READ THIS  VERY, VERY SPECIAL REQUEST:  About three weeks ago the Coke Chapel Childcare ask if Cokes would create a Jr. Mission Camp similar to the one UMW did last year with the 3rd-5th graders.  It was a huge success for the teachers and the students absolutely loved it!!!!  This year Childcare ask us to create a Jr. Mission Camp for 1, 2 year, 3 year, and 4 year old children (babies).
UMW is NOT involved with this years program, but depending on volunteers for support in offering the program.  It will amount to about 70 children all total.  We are working diligently to create plans that will engage these very young children for only 1 1/2 hours for 3 days.  Just so you understand they have an attention span of about 5-10 minutes at the most.  Therefore, we will need multiple activities to keep little bitty hands busy and engaged.

We are asking for a special donation to assist us with supplies we will need to keep these children entertained with related materials focused on the theme: “Let the Light of God’s LOVE Shine Through You!”  We will focus on LOVE, GIVING, and HELPING.

We are in need of the following if you can help us:

4 tubes of some really strong glue – E6000 general purpose 3.7 fl oz industrial strength)  $7-8 a tube (shop it on-line or Michael’s)

4 board books at a cost of about $12.00 per book (HOW Full IS YOUR Bucket?  Hardcover)

Supplies are running about $100 to $150 including paper, paper plates, cardboard rolls, bells, cardboard banks, crayons, board books, wax paper, rubber bands, and various other needs.

We are also looking for 4 people to assist, who have met the security requirements, to be in the classrooms with a teacher…we need all the help we can get.  We are truly trying to make it meaningful with lots of activities and songs i.e. Rise and Shine, the B I B L E, Jesus Loves Me, Let My Little Light Shine plus many, many, many more.

If you would like to make a monetary donation please make your check out to Cokes Chapel UMC and designate CCC JR. MISSION CAMP. Or, of course, we will accept cash.   And if you would like to help one, two or three days, please contact V. Snyder at vcsnyder@bellsouth.net.  Come help us…it’s going to be a blast or it might just be organized chaos!!!!  Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL AND YOUTH MINISTRY, July 7, 2020:

This week’s Inter-generational Sunday School lesson is on one of my favorite passages of scripture, 1 John 4:7-21.  This epistle focuses on the fact that we don’t love one another in order to earn God’s love. Rather, we are enabled to love God and one another because God first loved us (1 John 4:10).  This week we will be asked to reflect on the people who have shown us love, as well as the people with whom we share our love.
If you would like to be included in the email list and receive the lesson each week, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com.  Each lesson includes commentary to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as an optional activity that can be done at home with children and/or youth.

In Children’s Ministry, plans are underway to offer our 5th Annual Kid’s Mission Camp!  In partnership with Newnan First UMC, we are developing an “at-home camp” this year that children can engage in with their families.  The three-day camp will offer daily video devotions for kids, as well as daily mission projects.  This is a great opportunity for families to engage in serving others together!  The virtual component will also allow involvement from kids who live out of town (grandparents may want to sign-up out of town grandkids; let Kim know so that you can forward a supply list)! See the link for KIDS MISSION CAMP below!  Register NOW to receive video links and a FREE Camp Kit!

Youth Ministry, plans are being developed for more creative gatherings through technology, as well as ways for our young people to safely serve others during their summer break.  Look for more information throughout the month.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!
With love,
Kim
(Kim Reindl, Director of Inter-generational, Youth & Children’s Discipleship; kim.reindl@gmail.com)

Sign up for our 5th annual Kids Mission Camp as we join God in God’s work already happening in our homes, neighborhoods, and communities!

This year will be a virtual and at home hybrid where each day you can tune in to watch that day’s video, be encouraged to share God’s love by the work of your hands and the meditations of your heart, and then put that faith and love into action by completing easy service projects with your family!

The purpose of Kids Mission Camp is to help children realize that they are active Christ followers right NOW, and to help them see that they have the power to shine the light of God’s love and make a difference in the world through acts of compassion, giving, and service.

When:  July 28-30

Theme:  “Let the Light of God’s Love Shine Through You!”

Scripture Focus: Matthew 5:14-16 and Luke 10:27

Daily Projects:  Writing Encouragement Cards, Gathering Food or School Supplies, and Caring for God’s Creation

Kids Mission Camp is designed for children in rising 3rd through 6th grades.  However, we encourage families with children younger or older than these ages to also join in.  This year’s camp is designed to be appropriate for the entire family!

Register today to pick up your FREE family take home kit–which will include all directions and most of the supplies you will need to complete your projects at home.  Pickup times for your kit will be Sunday July 26 following worship services, or Monday July 27 from 6:00-7:00pm at Newnan First UMC.

TO REGISTER (please go to):  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1dAAmCwO_p_Het1C6h1nY0PAgLjeUFEGzkfNTPqE0DTo/viewform?edit_requested=true

NOTE:  If you would like to sign-up an out of town friend or relative to receive the videos, mission project instructions, and a supply list, please email Kim Reindl at kreindl@cokeschapel.org.  Camp Kits are available for local participants to pick-up the week of camp (July 26 & 27).

IMPORTANT CHANGE to WORSHIP Plans!
ONLINE Worship (only) this Sunday, July 5 and
NEW Location for Outdoor Worship on July 12

Following Church Council approval for the Guidelines for worship and gatherings, I received notice from Jimmy Parham, Trustee chair, regarding use of the upper field and concern for potential damage to the septic system drain field for the Child Care Center.

In light of this concern, for the time being, we will begin to host Drive-In worship in the Worship Center parking lot on July 12.  We need a bit of time to prepare, make adjustments and move equipment to the Worship Center. Therefore, this week, we will offer (only) online worship this Sunday, July 5.

We plan to start Drive-In Worship  on JULY 12 at 9 am.  Look for more details next week! Rain plan still remains in place, weekly videos will be posted for those unable to gather in person.  Health guidelines will remain the same and ask you arrive with your waiver prepared for easy entry.

Our worship, music and hospitality teams have been exceptionally flexible in making these adjustments.   I also thank you for your patience and support as we find our way towards best, safest gatherings, doing no harm – even to septic tanks when we worship!
Love and grace,
Pastor Lisa

June 25, 2020 G Chat

WORSHIP together resumes this Sunday, June 28th!

Cokes Chapel Family,

The Cokes Chapel Health and Welfare Team has been working hard to reimagine how those of us who are able might safely engage in In-Person Worship in this age of pandemic.  Again, we realize that not everyone is ready and/or able to take this step and we strongly encourage those who are at high risk to remain safely at home and continue worshiping online.  Regardless of how we worship, gathered in-person or gathered while apart, we are ALL part of Christ’s Body, the church!

As stated previously, considering all factors and in our best efforts to “Do No Harm,” the Health and Welfare Team has discerned that our initial gatherings for worship at Cokes Chapel should take place OUTDOORS.  We believe that this is the safest way to gather as a larger group at this time.  Outdoor worship is the first phase of our gathering together.  Considering the needs and expectations for our in-person gatherings will be an evolving process that will unfold over time with continual evaluation.

For those who choose to gather for In-Person Worship, this is what will be asked of you as we seek to worship God together, while also seeking to love and protect one another:

YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO:

  1. Remain six or more feet away from anyone attending the service who is not part of your party;
  2. Wear a mask anytime you are moving around the grounds.  Once seated, your mask may be removed if you prefer;
  3. Sanitize your hands frequently along with any common surfaces you come in contact with.
  4. Notify church authorities (Pastor Lisa Dempsey; ldempsey@cokeschapel.org) immediately should you or anyone in your party become ill with Covid symptoms, test positive for the virus or be exposed to anyone who has tested positive with in the last 14 days.

Here is the overall Worship Plan for Phase I:

WHAT:  WORSHIP IN THE ROUND

WHEN:  Weekly, Starting on Sunday, June 28th

WHERE:  OUTDOORS in the BACK FIELD of the church (behind the Childcare Center)

TIME:  One Service at 9:00 AM –  PLEASE PARK BY 8:30-8:45, IF YOU ARRIVE PAST THIS TIME PLEASE PARK IN THE CCCC PARKING LOT AND WALK UP TO THE UPPER FIELD WITH YOUR SEATING

HOW:  Each person/family will DRIVE to the back field via the road to the Youth House.  For those of you familiar with “Trunk or Treat,” it will be just like that!  (If you are unfamiliar with “Trunk or Treat,” NO WORRIES!  There will be plenty of people on site to direct you!). Cars will be parked in a circle around the perimeter of the field, 12 feet apart.  Ushers will direct you to your parking space.  You are asked to bring lawn chairs to sit in behind your car. All people will sit, safely distanced, facing towards our worship leaders and altar table at the center of the field.

RAIN PLAN:  Please worship “At Home” through the online YouTube video recording, as you have been.  An email notification will be sent out by early Sunday morning if the outdoor service is cancelled.

YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:

  • Masks—one mask per person
  • Hand Sanitizer—one bottle per car
  • Communion Elements—bread or cracker, and juice or water (enough for your family)
  • SIGNED “Acknowledgement” Form (See below for download)
  • Chairs—enough for your family to sit in
  • Bible—if you like to follow along with the reading

OFFERING:  Continue with online giving OR you may drop offering into a “touch free” offering bin/basket provided.  There will be NO passing of the offering plate/basket.  This is a “touch free” service.

RESTROOMS:  The Childcare Center lobby restroom will be available, but you are encouraged, if possible, to refrain from restroom use unless there is an emergency.  If needed, a volunteer Restroom Attendant will sanitize the restrooms after each use.

RESERVED PARKING:  People with special concerns/considerations will be allowed to reserve parking spots closest to the Childcare Center in case there is a possible need for the restroom.  If you need a reserved parking space, please email Cliff Seyler at cliffcfc14@gmail.com or Paul Snyder at pmsnyde@bellsouth.net.

OVERFLOW and LATE COMERS:  The field area closest to the sidewalk from the Childcare Center (CCCC) parking lot will be marked off for overflow and late arrivals.  Socially distanced areas will be marked for seating of individuals and/or family units to bring chairs.  If you are late or if parking is full, please park in the CCCC parking lot closest to the CCCC entrance (on the side of the building).

This is our plan!  We’d like to invite you to enter into to this with an open mind and an open heart.  Think of it as a grand experiment!  Although it is not what we are used to, based on the information and directives available to us, we believe that it is the safest and best plan possible.  (Quite honestly, I think it could be something really special!)

We humbly offer this plan to you in the hopes that it is pleasing to God and the safest possible option for our faith community at Cokes Chapel.

As we seek to figure this out together, may GRACE abound!  I look forward to seeing some of you this Sunday!

With love,
Kim

NEW SERMON SERIES STARTS JULY 5TH -26TH at 9:00 & 11:00

Some of the most intriguing stories in the Bible have to do with heat.  Fire and the presence of God make for lasting impressions in both the Old and New Testament.  Plan now to be with us for exploring how God gets our attention.  We may not be able to escape the heat of summer, but we can experience the fire that comes from being in God’s presence!
It’s going to be HOT in Newnan on Sunday Mornings, and I don’t mean the weather!  Dynamic stories of God are waiting for us to discover! Our return to worship (outside!!), albeit different, will be awesomely special and will enhance this series in ways we would never have dreamed! Look for coming news on our return to worship on Sunday, June 28.

Series: Sundays, July 5th through July 9th

By this time each year we are usually hard at work planning for our annual Outreach Dinner/Auction Fundraiser in August for our missionaries.  However, due to the restrictions caused by the pandemic, we are going to put the event on hold until we can do it safely and comfortably.

We have sufficient funds to support our missionaries for now.  However, we would like to give everyone the opportunity to help keep the missionaries account #2410 at the level we will need in the future.  If you would like to be a part of this, we ask that you make a Faith Promise.

A faith promise is a commitment to give above and beyond your regular tithe. It is made with the understanding that if a person’s financial picture can not sustain the commitment, the giving will not occur.  A faith promise is just that!  On faith, we promise to give to the Missionaries of Cokes Chapel. By faith, we will strive to keep that promise.  Faith promises are usually pledged monthly for a year at a time.  However, you may decide to handle it any way you wish.
If you are giving by faith promise or just as able, be sure to mark your giving with Missions.  Designating your gift on the check on envelope assures that your gift goes where you plan.

Just think:  If ten people give at least $10 a month, that would support one of the missionaries for a month. It’s amazing what can be done when we work together!  Please pray about this, and if you think this is something you can do, it would be helpful to let Betsy Bagley know what you would like to pledge to help the Houles, the Haddens, and Caleb Earle.  Thank you for all you do!!  Betsy and Earl Bagley, Outreach Chairs

SHARE THE NEWS!!   We are going to make our food pantry more available to people in our community.  Someone will be at the pavilion each Monday morning 9:30-11:00 to distribute prepared bags of food. Please spread the word to anyone you know who might need this service.

We need to maintain our canned goods, so please drop off donations of food in the bin under the pavilion.  Thank you for your support as we seek to help folks in our community!

G Chat June 18, 2020

New place, new space, God is waiting, and so are we!
Worship resumes June 28 at 9:00 am! Read the details below:

Cokes Chapel Family,

The Cokes Chapel Health and Welfare Team has been working hard to reimagine how those of us who are able, might safely engage in In-Person Worship in this age of pandemic.

For those who choose to gather for In-Person Worship, here is the Phase I plan:

WHAT:  WORSHIP IN THE ROUND

WHEN:  Weekly, Starting on Sunday, June 28th

WHERE:  OUTDOORS in the BACK FIELD of the church (behind the Childcare Center)

TIME:  One Service at 9:00 AMPlease park between 8:30-8:50 AM

An email notification will be sent out on Saturday if the outdoor service is cancelled.

YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:

  • Masks—one mask per person
  • Hand Sanitizer—one bottle per car
  • Communion Elements—bread or cracker, and juice or water (enough for your family)
  • Chairs—enough for your family to sit in
  • Bible—if you like to follow along with the reading

OFFERING:  Continue with online giving OR you may drop offering into a “touch free” offering bin/basket provided by an usher.  There will be NO passing of the offering plate/basket.  This is a “touch free” service.

RESTROOMS:  The Youth House restrooms will be available, but you are encouraged, if possible, to refrain from restroom use unless there is an emergency.  If needed, a volunteer Restroom Attendant will sanitize the restrooms after each use.

RESERVED PARKING:  People with special concerns/considerations will be allowed to reserve parking spots closest to the Youth House in case there is a possible need for the restroom.

With love,
