      “In-Person” Worship in our Sanctuary

Sundays, 10:00 am! As we return to indoor worship, we continue to social distance, wear masks and provide sanitizer in consideration of one another’s health safety.  Thank you for abiding by these guidelines!  For those who remain sheltered in, worship will be videotaped and uploaded for you sometime Sunday afternoon.

You are invited to join us for this ADVENT STUDY!

Sunday Mornings, November 29th-December 20th

During the season of Advent we prepare our hearts for the coming of the Christ child at Christmas.  Enter Advent this year with an attitude of curious expectancy and trustful anticipation.

As the holidays approach, it is easy to become consumed by busyness.  If you desire a time to slow down and focus on the true meaning of the season, join us for a four week study, “Behold! Cultivating Attentiveness in the Season of Advent,” by Pamela Hawkins.  This study encourages participants to linger for a while and pay close attention to the meaning of the season as you focus on a single word each week, pray beautiful prayers and hymn texts, and try various forms of prayer such as praying with images, silent prayer, prayer beads, and compline (night prayer).

Behold the season with new eyes, new ears, a new heart, and a sense of new possibilities. Let this study encourage and help you behold the “news of great joy,” Christ the Lord, who is coming to make all things new!

From your pastor:
Dear community, I will be on vacation from November 1-21.  Filling the pulpit on these 3 Sundays will be Kim Reindl, our All Saints service, on November 1.  On November 8 and 15, Reverend Joe Watson, a retired elder in the UMC will be leading worship.  Reverend Watson was recommended by our District Superintendent Susan Landry.  In case of pastoral concerns, please contact Larry Carter at 770-871-0051.

I will be back in the pulpit on Sunday, November 22, and “rair’in” to go for our Advent season.  God has good plans for Cokes Chapel!  As we all anticipate the beginnings of the Christmas season and the birth of our Savior, may each of you find moments of rest and renewal also. I am thankful that I serve a church that supports my need for rest and renewal, and am grateful for you!
Love and peace, Pastor Lisa

Allie and David Houle, our missionaries in Thailand, have been going through a very tense time, fearing they would not get their visas to remain in Thailand.  Here is some good news we received from them about their visas and about the young man Red that we have been helping get some much-needed dental work.

Good News! We got our 1 year visa!

Thank you to everyone for your prayers and support! We now have our work visa through October of 2021, which means we will not have to leave the country for at least another year. Leaving the country would be extremely difficult during this time, so we are so thankful we are able to continue to live, work, and serve God in Thailand. We are always thanking God that we have this opportunity to serve God here. We were told by many people that completed the visa without leaving the country would be impossible, but God made a way! Thank you for your prayers!

Also, thank you for all the donations for Red’s teeth! He has already had 2 appointments with the dentist here in Pattaya and we have 2 more visits to go. We will give you more updates on his progress next month!

HOW to participate: To donate money to purchase gift cards for food, please give funds to Caroline Huckaby or Betsy Bagley.  If you prefer to write a check to the church, be sure to designate “Thanksgiving Food” on the “for” line on your check.

Growing Your Faith Through GENEROSITY

“In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus,” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
“Oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples,” (1 Chronicles 18:8).

Ever wonder why this time of the year is set aside for thanksgiving? It certainly did not start as a religious holiday when the Pilgrims along with the native Indians sat around a table and “broke bread” together.  However, over the years, through the efforts of a woman who lobbied the Lincoln Congress to make Thanksgiving a national holiday, Lincoln declared it a holiday in 1863.

In his recognition, Lincoln said, “No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow – citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.    It was obvious from Lincoln’s words, it was to be a day to give thanks to Almighty God.

Later during the Great Depression; and, in an attempt to extend the Christmas shopping time as an economic move, Franklin Roosevelt declared the 4th Thursday in November as the official date for Thanksgiving.

Where does your gratitude lay?  Family, friends, time, talents and the resources you have been given.  Gratitude in an inward emotion of the outward gifts that God has given each one of us. Rejoice and be grateful.

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL & YOUTH MINISTRY, NOVEMBER 4, 2020:

In Inter-generational Ministry, registration for our upcoming ADVENT STUDY is underway!  Starting on Sunday, November 29th everyone is invited to join the Inter-generational Sunday School class as we engage in a four week study for the Advent season!  We will be gathering in-person prior to worship on Sunday mornings, November 29-December 20, from 8:45-9:45 am.  The study focuses on a different word each week (i.e., Expectancy, Preparation, Faith, Promise) and is based in Scripture reading and prayer.  Please see additional information in this G-Chat.  To register, please contact kim.reindl@gmail.com.

Inter-generational Sunday School is continuing with “at home” lessons until the beginning of Advent on November 29th.  This week’s lesson explores the covenant through Jesus as found in Luke 22:14-20.  If you would like to be included in the email list and receive this “at home” lesson, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com.  Each lesson includes Bible facts to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as opportunity for spiritual practice.

In Inter-generational and Youth Ministry, Prayer Partners will meet via Zoom on this Sunday, November 8th for the second of our monthly Zoom gatherings.  We will be exploring the ancient Christian practice of how to pray through visualization and the imagination (i.e., praying without words).  After a short time of learning, prayer partners will be invited into breakout rooms with one another and given the opportunity to talk and share prayer praises and concerns “face to face” through technology.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!
With love,
Kim
(Kim Reindl, Director of Inter-generational, Youth & Children’s Discipleship; kim.reindl@gmail.com)

Church work is always evolving!  One decision made at our Zoom Annual Conference was to consolidate the 12 districts into 8.  Cokes Chapel is now part of the Southwest District.  Our District Superintendent is still Rev. Susan Landry.  The District office is now located in Griffin to accommodate the 130 churches in the district.

Take a moment to look over the decision and map.  I am thankful for the Bishop and conference for consolidating the districts, lowering our costs of operation and grateful that we have a District Superintendent that knows Cokes and cares for us!

Growing Your Faith Through GENEROSITY

Scripture says, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also
reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-8

In the last several weeks we have focused on the parable below:

A wealthy man was preparing to leave on a trip when he learned of a family that had suffered a great loss and was nearly destitute. He had compassion on them but was pressed to depart so he called for his son and gave him a check, saying: “I am leaving on a trip and I have compassion for the family who has suffered such a loss. Please take this check, keep what you need for your own expenses and give the remainder to this family as a gift from me. If you are still in need, tell me. Remember, I love you and will always take care of you.”  After the father departed, the son cashed the check, then he took the funds and…How will the parable end?

In week 1 the son considered the things he didn’t have but wanted.  He bought what he wanted then he pridefully gave what was left to the family.  His father, upon his return, was disappointed that his son didn’t trust him.  The moral with this ending is we are never more like God than when we give. Seek and understand the character of God.

In week 2 the son grew frustrated by his father’s request. He would be obedient, but not joyful. He took his portion and delivered the remainder to the family in need. Seeing how appreciative the family was for the generous gift, the son accepted the praise and honor for his gift…he never told them the gift was from his father.  When the father returned and learned of his son’s actions, he was sad. “While you gave a good amount, your heart was not right. Why, when I gave to you so selflessly, did you keep the glory for the gift for yourself?”  The moral with this ending is we glorify God when we give in his name. Seek and understand the character of God.

In week 3 the son did as his father asked. He took just just what he needed, then took even some of that and added it to the amount to be given to the family. Then joyfully, he gave the amount to the family in need. The family rejoiced and wanted to tell everyone of his generous gift. He told them the gift was from his father who was compassionate and kind. It was his father’s generosity they should praise, and not himself, for he was only being an obedient son. When the father returned and learned of his son’s actions, he was pleased. “Well done, son. Because you have been faithful with what I provided, I will entrust you with much more so that the world may experience my generosity through you.”
The Scripture teaches us giving in God’s name blesses both the giver and receiver: “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” (Acts 20:35)
And, giving rewards us with God’s continued provision for us to steward.  In Luke 6:38 it is written “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Giving allows us to experience the fullness of the life God created us to live. “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” (1 Tim. 6:17-19)  The moral with this ending is we experience the life that is truly life as we give selflessly, joyfully, freely and with a heart to glorify God.

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL, YOUTH & CHILDREN’S MINISTRY, October 28, 2020:

In Youth Ministry, last Sunday we began our “Praise Pop-Ins” (i.e., “We praise God for you!;” 1 Corinthians 1:4-9), as a way of offering love and encouragement to members of the Cokes Chapel family who may be experiencing difficult or challenging times.  This is an opportunity for small groups of youth (2-4 youth) and accompanying adults (2-3 adults) to serve by using their gifts and talents in loving outreach to others in community.  For our October “Pop-Ins” we visited two houses.  The Pop-In Team remained outside at a safe distance while offering conversation, Scripture reading, music, prayer, and a blessing.  Recipients were also gifted with care packages that included baked goods and artwork from the youth.  Additional “Praise Pop-In” Teams will be making visits in November and December.

In Inter-generational Ministry, Prayer Partnerships are continuing as youth and college age young adults have been partnered with adults in our congregation, praying for each other daily while communicating prayer needs and celebrations on a weekly basis.  Inter-generational Sunday School is continuing with “at home” lessons until the beginning of Advent on November 29th, when we will begin gathering again in-person with the start of an Advent Study. This week’s at home Sunday School lesson continues our focus on covenant with the story of Ezra reading the Instruction Scroll to the people as found in Nehemiah 8:1-12.  If you would like to be included in the email list and receive this “at home” lesson, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com.  Each lesson includes Bible facts to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as opportunity for spiritual practice.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!
With love,
Kim

      “In-Person” Worship in our Sanctuary
                                       NEW TIME: 10:00 am

As we return to indoor worship, we continue to social distance, wear masks and provide sanitizer in consideration of one another’s health safety.  Thank you for abiding by these guidelines!  For those who remain sheltered in, worship will be videotaped and uploaded for you sometime Sunday afternoon. You may refer to the recent “Returning to Inside Worship” from Pastor Lisa for further details.

From your pastor:
Last spring, I was awarded a month long sabbatical from the North Georgia Conference for 20 years of service to the UMC.  I had scheduled that time for May, however the Covid event started just prior to that time, so I canceled.  Since the Sabbatical program is currently not functioning due to COVID difficulties, I have been reminded to take some time by using vacation, November 1-21.  I am thankful that I serve a church that supports my need for rest and renewal, and am grateful for you!

Filling the pulpit on these 3 Sundays will be Kim Reindl, our All Saints service, on November 1. November 8 and 15, Reverend Joe Watson, a retired elder in the UMC will be leading worship.

You are in my prayers even when away, when resting and yes, on vacation!
Love and peace, Pastor Lisa

“Finding Our Way”   Join us in this sermon series through out October for a month-long focus on prayer.  Jesus’ taught on prayer throughout his ministry.  Prayer is the lifeblood to our faith. Prayer is  a sacred time when we open to the Holy Spirit to reveal, teach, comfort, and heal.

We will again be helping people in our community to have a special Thanksgiving dinner.  Due to the corona virus and our desire to keep everyone safe, we are going to provide gift cards to families.  They will use the grocery cards to buy their own food, and it will not be necessary for our folks to spend so much time in stores.

Matt. 6:1-4  “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Stewardship is utilizing and managing all the resources (our time, talents and resources) that God provides for the glory of God and the betterment of His creation. Being a faithful generous steward is a choice you make.  Let us take this basic idea of biblical stewardship using the following story;

Remember, I love you and will always take care of you.”

Week # 2…the son grew frustrated by his father’s request.

He would be obedient, but not joyful. Begrudgingly he took his portion and delivered the remainder to the family in need. Seeing it they rejoiced and told everyone of his generosity, praising and thanking him for the gift. The son accepted the praise and never told them it was from his father. If he couldn’t keep the money, at least he could enjoy the praise and honor for his lavish generosity.

When the father returned and learned of his son’s actions, he was sad. “While you gave a good amount, your heart was not right. Why, when I gave to you so selflessly, did you keep the glory for the gift for yourself?”

We must hear Scripture as it teaches us to give as God gives to us; joyfully and lavishly:  “In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. (2 Cor. 8:2-4)

Scripture teaches us to give with a desire for God to receive all the glory: “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” (2 Cor. 9:10-14)

The Moral: We glorify God when we give in his name.

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL, YOUTH & CHILDREN’S MINISTRY, October 21, 2020:

In Inter-generational Ministry, Prayer Partnerships will be continuing throughout the fall.  Youth and college age young adults have been partnered with adults in our congregation to pray for each other during the months of October through December.  This is an opportunity for the church family to hold and support one another in prayer across the generations.  Prayer partners are praying for each other daily, communicating prayer needs and celebrations on a weekly basis, and joining with the larger group of Prayer Partner Participants monthly, via Zoom, to engage a prayer focus and for breakout time with their partner.

Inter-generational Sunday School will continue with “at home” lessons until the beginning of Advent on November 29th, when the hope is to begin gathering again in-person with the start of an Advent Study. This week’s lesson continues our focus on covenant with the story of Joshua and God’s covenant with the people as found in Joshua 24:14-28.  If you would like to be included in the email list and receive this “at home” lesson, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com.  Each lesson includes Bible facts to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as opportunity for spiritual practice.

In Youth Ministry, our youth gathered in person this past Sunday for a time of fall fellowship!  We met outdoors at the Youth House for pizza and circle time, a Cemetery Scavenger Hunt (a great way to learn about the rich history of Cokes Chapel!), and a “Speedy Pumpkin Decorating Contest!”

Finally, in Children’s Ministry, in lieu of Trunk or Treat, we will continue to support the work of our Childcare Center through the donations of candy and prizes/trinkets to be used in their in class celebrations.  During the month of October, please bring any donations with you to worship on Sunday mornings and place them in the bin in the narthex or drop them off anytime in the bin outside the church office.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!

Thanksgiving Baskets
We will again be helping people in our community to have a special Thanksgiving dinner.  Due to the corona virus and our desire to keep everyone safe, we are going to provide gift cards to families.  They will use the grocery cards to buy their own food, and it will not be necessary for our folks to spend so much time in stores.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Last week, you read the beginning of a parable:

A wealthy man was preparing to leave on a trip when he learned of a family that had suffered a great loss and was nearly destitute. He had compassion on them but was pressed to depart so he called for his son and gave him a check, saying: “I am leaving on a trip and I have compassion for the family who has suffered such a loss. Please take this check, keep what you need for your own expenses and give the remainder to this family as a gift from me. If you are still in need, tell me. Remember, I love you and will always take care of you.”
After the father departed, the son cashed the check, then he took the funds and…How will parable end?

For the next three weeks we will consider three possible endings along with the father’s response to each situation.  We will learn what the Word teaches us about generosity.

Week #1: …the son considered the things he did not have.  He envied the things his friends had and he believed his father would not provide the funds to get what he envied.  His father gave him no specific instructions so he bought what he wanted then he pridefully gave what was left to the family which was much smaller than the original amount would have been.

When the father returned and learned of his son’s actions, he was sad. “I gave you so much, I promised to meet your needs, why did you give so little? I wanted you to show my compassion, but you have shown me to be a miser. Why didn’t you trust me?”

Does this story sound familiar to you?

  • Scripture tells us in Matthew 6: 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Jesus encourages us to trust God to provide.
  • In Matthew 10:8b He tells us to give through our freedom: Freely you have received; freely give.”
  • In 1 John 3:17-18 He tells us that God’s love will be seen through our giving: “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

The Moral: We are never more like God than when we give. Seek and understand the character of God.

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL, YOUTH & CHILDREN’S MINISTRY, October 14, 2020:

In Inter-generational Ministry, Prayer Partnerships have begun!  Last Sunday, participants gathered via Zoom to learn more about sharing in prayer during the weeks ahead and to learn about intercessory prayer.  Their Zoom time also allowed for partners to enter a “breakout room” with one another to share about joys and challenges in their lives and to communicate prayer needs.   Partners will be praying for each other daily for the next 10 weeks, throughout the months of October through December.

In this week’s Inter-generational Sunday School lesson, we will begin a 4 week focus on covenant.  Covenant is a very important concept throughout Scripture.  Covenant establishes the foundation of relationship between God and God’s people, spanning our Biblical history from Abraham to Jacob to Israel to David to Christ.  This week we will read about the covenant at Sinai as found in Exodus 24:1-12.  If you would like to be included in the email list and receive this “at home” lesson, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com.  Each lesson includes Bible facts to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as opportunity for spiritual practice.

In Youth Ministry, our youth will be gathering outdoors this Sunday at the Youth House for a time of fellowship.  This will be an opportunity to engage in some fall fun with a scavenger hunt and “speedy” pumpkin decorating contest.

Finally, in Children’s Ministry, in lieu of Trunk or Treat, we will continue to support the work of our CCCC through the donations of candy and prizes/trinkets.  During the month of October, please bring any donations with you to worship on Sunday mornings and place them in the bin in the narthex or drop them off anytime in the bin outside the church office.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!
With love,
Kim
