G Chat December 3, 2020

                          IN-PERSON WORSHIP
      returns this Sunday, December 6, 10:00 a.m.

Worship    Sunday, December 6th – Second Sunday of Advent

Sermon:     “Finding Peace in Our Struggles”

                          Scripture:    Luke 2:8-20

To Light a Candle
This year our Advent season started out unexpectedly.  Worship on-line was the order of the day due to covid.  In spite of the adjustment, something wonderful happened!  Velda did herself proud with the visuals and we had a wonderful Advent Wreath lighting.   I hope you were able to watch the McCallie-Kimball family do the scripture readings and light our first candle.  It is always a special time when we have families to lead us in preparing for Christmas with the Advent Wreath.  Over the years I can remember people of all ages;  single, married, widowed and friends who have come before the congregation to herald – the time is near for the birth of Christ!

Each family makes an imprint in our spirits, as we listen, watch and attend to their words.  Some of the best times come as little ones light the candle and we all hold our breath until it catches the wick.  It’s harder for the little ones to reach up, to see where to put the lighter.  That could also be a reflection of our efforts to reach the spirit of preparation as we reach beyond our daily lives.  The hardships of this season due to Covid, the missed family gatherings and church special events and the circumstances of the world make it ever so hard to see where the light is.

I get the sense that God is watching us, just as we watch our “littles” light the candle.  With holy patience and great love, God gazes down on us, urging us to reach just a bit further, to stretch our souls to connect to the coming Light of the World.  Every time we catch the love of God and see the flame glow we are bringing the message of Advent, Emmanuel, to the world.

God’s Spirit is a moving wind, a quiet rustle, a silent night, and a light that conquers darkness.  Catch the love that comes in the form of a little baby boy, who came to truly bring hope, peace, joy and love to all humankind.  Share the love and light a candle as we prepare for this Holy Night.
See you Sunday!
Pastor Lisa

Backpack Buddies Need Our Help

Between mid-March and the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, Backpack Buddies was able to provide over 23,000 weekend bags to families in need. Before the shut down in March, they had hit a record high of serving bags to just under 1,300 students. The goal is to add more students in need.

Typically, this is the time of year that they hold their annual silent auction dinner to help raise money for Backpack Buddies. Because of Covid, the event will not take place.  They would like us to help them reach their year-end goal to raise $25,000 by December 31st.  These funds will allow Backpack Buddies to continue to serve our current students as well as add other students that are in need of additional food over the weekend and school breaks.

You can make a year-end donation online at www.backpackbuddiesga.org/give-1 or by mailing a check to Backpack Buddies at 96 Werz Industrial Blvd., Newnan, GA 30263. Together we can make a difference and help those in need “because hunger doesn’t take the weekend off”.

From our Child Care Director:  Kristin invites church members to drop in and pray over the Christmas gifts that both the Church and Child Care Center have collected for families in need in our community on Thursday, December 10, from 10 to 4 in the Worship Center

Growing Our Faith…
Monthly projected operating funds needed: $20,400
Actual operating funds collected as of November 30: $19,248.29

As we give thanks in this season, I am mindful and thankful for each of you, your faithful giving and serving, your prayers and presence as you are able.  To God be the Glory!  Come and Behold Him!  At work in us for the world!
Peace,
Pastor Lisa

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL & YOUTH MINISTRY, December 2 and 9, 2020:

In Inter-generational Ministry, the Inter-generational Sunday School class has begun a four week study for the Advent season.  We gathered via Zoom on Sunday, Nov. 29th and focused on how the Advent season is a time of “expectancy,”  anticipating the coming of the Christ Child once again.  On Sunday, Dec. 6th, the class lesson will be sent in video form.  We will be gathering in-person prior to worship on Sunday mornings, Dec. 13th and 20th, from 8:45-9:45 am in the Youth House.  Each week the study, Behold: Cultivating Attentiveness in the Season of Advent, encourages participants to pay close attention to the meaning of the season by focusing on a single word, reflecting on Scripture texts, and trying various forms of prayer such as praying with images, silent prayer, prayer beads, and compline (night prayer).

Also in Inter-generational Ministry, Prayer Partners will gather for our final time as a group on Sunday, December 13th via Zoom.  In this gathering, participants will learn more about how acts of service and creative expression can be a form of prayer.  During the meeting, each person will be given the opportunity to share time with their partner in a “breakout room.”

In Youth Ministry, our annual Youth Christmas Party will take place in the Worship Center on Sunday, December 20th from 5:00-7:30 pm.  This will be a time for our youth to celebrate with one another the joy of the Christmas season through fellowship and fun and games, while responsibly attending to safety protocols for such gatherings.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!

Happy Advent!
With love,
Kim

Dear Pastor Lisa & Members of Cokes Chapel UMC
Thank you for your support of Wellroot Family Services through your increased give of $325 to the Amazing Grace offering!  While the pandemic may  have changed many things in our lives, it has NOT changed the need for loving, nurturing homes for children and youth in foster care.  Your Amazing Grace gift gives home to these precious children, and we are so grateful!  God bless you.
Peace, April McGlothin-Eller, Director of Community Development

G-Chat November 25, 2020

                                     One more Sunday
                  NO IN-PERSON WORSHIPNOV. 29TH

In June, 2020, Cokes Chapel Church Council approved Guidelines for Covid.  We are mandated to notify you of a known COVID exposure.  Per guidelines, this is notice that a person who attended worship on Sunday, November 15, subsequently tested positive for COVID.   In accordance with the Guidelines, we will NOT hold in-person worship this Sunday, Nov. 29.  A recorded worship service will be sent for our first Advent Sunday.  Look for special guests who will bring us our Advent reading!

Please keep our member and others who are suffering whether due to Covid or other circumstances in your prayers.  Remember those who are serving, caring and healing the sick.

We all recognize that exposure is a potential at all times, whether at church, the grocery store or even as we get together as families.  Church throughout history has met and survived through many challenges.  With prayer, faith and our eyes on Christ, we will join the triumphant band of those who carry the banner forward of faith.
We expect to resume in-person worship on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 10:00 in the sanctuary.

Praying for good health and peace,
Pastor Lisa

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL & YOUTH MINISTRY, NOVEMBER 24, 2020:

In Inter-generational Ministry, starting this Sunday, November 29th, the Inter-generational Sunday School class will begin a four-week study for the Advent season!  We will be gathering via Zoom and/or through video technology on Sundays, Nov. 29th and Dec. 6th.  We plan to gather in-person prior to worship on Sunday mornings, Dec. 13th and 20th, from 8:45-9:45 am.  We will be using the book Behold: Cultivating Attentiveness in the Season of Advent, by Pamela Hawkins. The study encourages participants to linger for a while and pay close attention to the meaning of the season as you focus on a single word each week, pray beautiful prayers and hymn texts, and try various forms of prayer such as praying with images, silent prayer, prayer beads, and compline (night prayer).

In Youth Ministry, a Zoom Youth Group gathering was held last Sunday with a focus on giving thanks.  We began with a fun video game of “Nailed It or Failed It: Deep Fried Turkey Edition!”  The lesson covered a discussion of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 and how we might rejoice and give thanks in all circumstances, even when things are not as we have expected them to be.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!

Happy Thanksgiving!
With love,
Kim

NO IN-PERSON WORSHIP ON NOV. 22ND OR 29TH

In June, 2020, Cokes Chapel Church Council approved Guidelines for Covid.  In it, we are mandated to notify you of a known COVID exposure.  Per guidelines, this is to notify you that a person who attended worship on Sunday, November 15, subsequently tested positive for COVID.

In accordance with the Guidelines, we will NOT hold in-person worship Sunday, Nov. 22 and 29.  We plan to provide a recorded worship service for each Sunday.

I am sure that you find this information distressing.  We delight in one another’s company, and enjoy our worship time together. I was looking forward to returning to the pulpit Sunday.  So, while our anticipations to gather will be on hold for a bit, I confidently hold on to the truth: that we remain bound together in heart and spirit as the body of Christ.

Please keep our member in your prayers for a quick and easy recovery.  Remember others who are also serving, caring and healing the sick.  We all recognize that exposure is a potential at all times, whether at church, the grocery store or even as we get together as families.  Church throughout history has met and survived through many challenges.  With prayer, faith and our eyes on Christ, we will join the triumphant band of those who carry the banner forward of faith.

Praying for good health and peace,
Pastor Lisa

Behold the season with new eyes, new ears, a new heart, and a sense of new possibilities. Let this study encourage and help you behold the “news of great joy,” Christ the Lord, who is coming to make all things new!

The season looks different this year, but this five-week series on the themes of Advent (Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love), will help us discover the certainty of God’s love in uncertain times. It’s the perfect time to ReDiscover Christmas in a new light.

One of the most valuable pieces of this series is the downloadable ReDiscover Christmas Advent Reading Plan. Christmas Angel Tree – UPDATE

Due to the cancellation of worship services the next two weeks, we will not have the actual Angel Tree set up in the narthex.  However, we still have many special children that need our help, so we will adapt and get it done.
If you would like to provide one or more gifts, please email Betsy Bagley as soon as possible and tell her two things:  Boy or Girl,        Toy or Clothes.
Then she will send you the information and instructions on getting the gifts to the church.
Please participate, and help make Christmas extra special for these precious children!

“Growing Your Faith through GENEROSITY”–  1 Corinthians 13:4-5 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. I would like to suggest that you read then re-read this scripture from 1 Corinthians. Visualize yourself as part of the Apostle Paul’s community of believers.  With only these few words, what was Paul’s message?

Finance passed a negative budget for 2021.  That budget will go to Church Council for approval.  Finance settled on a negative budget based on projected expense from program chairs verses the projected income for 2021 and extenuating circumstances.  Finance reached this decision after much discussion based on the following:
1.  Both loans, Childcare and Youth House, are in the process of renewal which will change the financial landscape once completed.
2.  We have been in a pandemic since March 2020 which has resulted in a decrease in attendance.
3.  Projected income was very difficult to determine for 2020 including the loss of rent for both the parsonage for 4 months and the childcare center for three months.
4.  The church has not been able to recover from the $25K+ funds spent in 2019 for unbudgeted expenses i.e. HVAC units.
5.  Lastly, the art of compromise did not appear as an option at this point.

Growing Our Faith…
Monthly projected operating funds needed: $20,400
Actual operating funds collected as of November 18: $18,428.29

Finance is truly grateful for your faithful generosity. You help to keep ministries of this little white church running.  Thank you!

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL & YOUTH MINISTRY, NOVEMBER 18, 2020:

In Inter-generational Ministry, this is our FINAL WEEK OF REGISTRATION for our upcoming ADVENT STUDY!  Starting on Sunday, November 29th everyone is invited to join the Inter-generational Sunday School class as we engage in a four week study for the Advent season!  We will be gathering via Zoom and/or through video technology on Sundays, Nov. 29th and Dec. 6th.  We plan to gather in-person prior to worship on Sunday mornings, Dec. 13th and 20th, from 8:45-9:45 am.  The study focuses on a different word each week (i.e., Expectancy, Preparation, Faith, Promise) and is based in Scripture reading and prayer.  Please see additional information in this G-Chat.  To register, please contact kim.reindl@gmail.com.

Inter-generational Sunday School is continuing with “at home” lessons until the beginning of Advent on November 29th.  This week we will read from Luke 4 and study about how Jesus brought a new message to the people but continued to follow many of the same traditions and worship from the past.  If you would like to be included in the email list and receive this “at home” lesson, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com.  Each lesson includes Bible facts to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as opportunity for spiritual practice.

In Youth Ministry we will be gathering this Sunday, via Zoom, in lieu of our previously scheduled in-person gathering.

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!
With love,
Kim

During the season of Advent we prepare our hearts for the coming of the Christ child at Christmas.  Enter Advent this year with an attitude of curious expectancy and trustful anticipation.

As the holidays approach, it is easy to become consumed by busyness.  If you desire a time to slow down and focus on the true meaning of the season, join us for a four week study, “Behold! Cultivating Attentiveness in the Season of Advent,” by Pamela Hawkins.  This study encourages participants to linger for a while and pay close attention to the meaning of the season as you focus on a single word each week, pray beautiful prayers and hymn texts, and try various forms of prayer such as praying with images, silent prayer, prayer beads, and compline (night prayer).

Behold the season with new eyes, new ears, a new heart, and a sense of new possibilities. Let this study encourage and help you behold the “news of great joy,” Christ the Lord, who is coming to make all things new!

Advent Series coming November 29th . . .  “Rediscover Christmas”

We are all at our limits with so much on our plates, from pandemic, social distancing, politics (I write this before the election, but still….) and our own coping with these subjects and more.  A thoughtful way as Christians to see our way through is offered to as we listen in on the topic of “Frustration” on At the Table as Bishop Sue talks with Rev. Lindsay Geist, a gifted leader and licensed clinical social worker, about the frustration and grief we’re feeling in this time of pandemic and how to turn our thoughts toward all that is life-giving and worthy of praise.

Worship Information

Sunday, November 15th in the Sanctuary at 10:00 am – Rev. Joe Watson
Sermon:     Jesus’ Investment Advisor
Scripture:    Matthew 25:14-30

Every day is an opportunity to increase our Master’s portfolio.Michael Donnelly, a former financial advisor, lied to 13 of his clients and stole almost $2 million from them — most of them elderly. This happens too often. Consider Aequitas Management, Robert Lunn, Charles Banks, Ash Narayan and others. In today’s gospel reading, Jesus tells the story of a master who gives three of his servants some cash to play with. Think of these characters as financial advisors. What happens to the client’s money?

We continue to maintain our Covid guidelines of social distancing, wearing masks, as well as other items you can read about here:  https://www.cokeschapel.org/hp_wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Worship-Guidelines-for-Individuals.pdf

From your pastor:
Dear community, I will be on vacation from November 1-21.  Filling the pulpit on these 3 Sundays will be Kim Reindl, our All Saints service, on November 1.  On November 8 and 15, Reverend Joe Watson, a retired elder in the UMC will be leading worship.  Reverend Watson was recommended by our District Superintendent Susan Landry.  In case of pastoral concerns, please contact Larry Carter at 770-871-0051.

I will be back in the pulpit on Sunday, November 22, and “rair’in” to go for our Advent season.  God has good plans for Cokes Chapel!  As we all anticipate the beginnings of the Christmas season and the birth of our Savior, may each of you find moments of rest and renewal also. I am thankful that I serve a church that supports my need for rest and renewal, and am grateful for you!
Love and peace, Pastor Lisa

Christmas Angel Tree

Our Angel Tree for 2020 will be up in the narthex on Sunday, November 22nd.  Please choose a tag/tags from the tree to provide a Christmas gift for a child in our community.  Due to the virus, our Cokes Chapel worship service attendance is significantly smaller.  Please keep this in mind and help with as many of these children’s gifts as possible.
It is very important that you remember to sign your name on the clipboard sheet so we will know who has each child’s tag.
You will find additional instructions on the back of each tag.  The gifts are due at least by December 6th  (by Nov. 29th would be even better!)  If you have any questions, please contact Betsy Bagley. ebbagley@gmail.com

Thanksgiving Baskets

We will again be helping people in our community to have a special Thanksgiving dinner.  Due to the corona virus and our desire to keep everyone safe, we are going to provide gift cards to families.  They will use the grocery cards to buy their own food, and it will not be necessary for our folks to spend so much time in stores.
HOW to participate: To donate money to purchase gift cards for food, please give funds to Caroline Huckaby or Betsy Bagley.  If you prefer to write a check to the church, be sure to designate “Thanksgiving Food” on the “for” line on your check.

HAPPY FALL YA’LL – The UMW Annual Holiday Luncheon will be on Nov 19th at 11:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall.  All ladies of the church are invited to come and celebrate the food, friends and fun around the tables.  The luncheon menu will be lasagna, salad, rolls, dessert and drinks.  Be sure to bring a holiday gift to exchange in the fun-filled UMW way!  ($10.00 gift limit) We will look forward to seeing you.

OLD FASHIONED BAKE SALE – Immediately after worship on Sunday, November 15th & November 22nd  – The UMW is sponsoring a bake sale that will offer the “best of the best” home made desserts and goodies (cakes, pies, candy and cookies) for you to take home.  Great for freezing for Thanksgiving, or just to enjoy the fall season.  Items will be carefully wrapped and labeled.  All proceeds will go to the various charitable organizations UMW currently supports!  After worship step across the street to the Fellowship Hall to pick out something yummy!

Prayer Team has resumed and everyone is invited!  We are meeting on Wednesday nights at 5:30 pm.  We will be meeting in the Sanctuary for the month of November.  We would love for you to attend!  If you would like to join us for a “drop-in” to ask for a prayer request, to be prayed with, or to be prayed for, we would love to have you!  No commitment necessary!  Stop by and join us for prayer!  Everyone try to arrange your schedule to attend, if you aren’t there we will miss you.  We will wear masks and social distance.

Stewardship is utilizing and managing all the resources (our time, talents and resources) that God provides for the glory of God and the betterment of His creation. Being a faithful generous steward is a choice you make.  We are never more like God than when we give. Seek and understand the character of God.

Growing Our Faith…
Monthly projected operating funds needed: $20,400
Actual operating funds collected as of November 11: $12,947.29
Thank you… for God loves a cheerful giver and it is truly more blessed to give than to receive.
Seek and know the character of GOD!  AMEN

Finance met on Wednesday, November 4, 2020.
1. We will continue to make deposits on Wednesday until the end of the year.
2. Trustees are working to renew the Childcare loan and the loan on the Youth House.  The bank currently gives a timeline for completion of February-March.

MINISTRY MESSAGE:  INTER-GENERATIONAL & YOUTH MINISTRY, NOVEMBER 11, 2020:

In Inter-generational Ministry, registration for our upcoming ADVENT STUDY is underway!  Starting on Sunday, November 29th everyone is invited to join the Inter-generational Sunday School class as we engage in a four week study for the Advent season!  We will be gathering in-person prior to worship on Sunday mornings, November 29-December 20, from 8:45-9:45 am.

This week we will be beginning a new unit focused on places of worship, which, as found in the Scripture, can be simple, impromptu altars in response to unexpected meetings with God, or meticulously planned and constructed buildings.  This Sunday we will read about how our faith fathers, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, and Samuel, all built altars to God as ways to commemorate encounters with God.  If you would like to be included in the email list and receive this “at home” lesson, please contact Kim Reindl at kim.reindl@gmail.com.  Each lesson includes Bible facts to help enlighten your study, questions for thought and reflection, as well as opportunity for spiritual practice.

In Inter-generational and Youth Ministry, Prayer Partners met via Zoom last Sunday, November 8th for the second of our monthly Zoom gatherings.  We explored the ancient Christian practice of how to pray through visualization and the imagination (i.e., praying without words).  This was a new way of prayer for most of the participants.  Several noted that being able to pray for oneself and others through visualization (i.e., picturing a person being held in the light of God’s love, or imaging Jesus walking with you or holding you in the midst of pain or struggle), offered a sense of freedom and comfort.   Prayer Partners were also given time together in “breakout rooms to talk and share prayer praises and concerns.”

God is at work all around us!  May we hold each other by heart and lift each other by prayer as we journey together, and apart!
With love,
Kim
